Solution

Overview

Education Consulting firm has 5 departments i.e. front-desk, manager, consultants, finance and guest. These 5 departments are configured with VLANs which will enable the user to configure access-list easily. For designing and configuring the network, the NetSim Boson Software is used because the assessment is based on NetSim Boson. The NetSim Boson tool provider various Cisco based hardware devices for configuration but, no servers are provided for configuration. To complete the assessment, a patter is followed i.e. project scope, project requirements, network design, IP addressing, network topology diagram. The Network Topology Diagram will include further 4 parts i.e. Switch configuration, router configuration, access-point and server configuration guidelines, security configuration. In the article, the project format to complete the assessment will be discussed.

Project Scope

Project Scope is a part of project planning and used to determine and document the list of specific goals, deliverables and functions etc. But for this assessment, the project scope will be discussed by relating to the organization. For example, to block the Finance VLANs for all the departments except for the Consultant and finance department.

Project Requirements

The project requirements will be used to discuss the functional and non-functional requirement. In the functional requirements, things needed through the network will be discussed. For example: - Implement an IP addressing scheme in the network which will enable the devices to communicate with each other. Non-Functional requirements will be used to discuss the operational activities related to a network configured. For Example: - Availability, Reliability, Scalability etc.

Network Design

In this section, the network design approach will be discussed. Most commonly, the user-centric approach is discussed because it helps in implementing all users’ requirements in the network designing. There are different phases provided in the user-centric approach, by which network can be designed. The phases may vary according to the requirement in designing the network.

IP Addressing Scheme

To all the devices, an IP address is required to be configured. IP address will act as a unique address and will help the router to find a suitable route for transferring the packet. In this section, the addressing scheme will be discussed. Variable length subnetting mask technique is needed to use in the assessment because it limits the wastage of IP address.

Network Topology Diagram

The network design is a physical and logical layout of network that is implemented for the Education Consulting Firm. In the assessment, the network design is created by using the NetSim Boson. Only, the physical connectivity is required to discuss in the report.

Switch Configuration

Switch is a multi-port device which allows users to connect the devices in a network. In the switch, the different VLANs are configured and FastEthernet port will be assigned to the VLANs.

Router configuration

Router is configured to connect the network with the internet. It will also act as a gateway for the different departments and will help in communication. To enable the communication path, the routing protocol RIP will be used. But the user can select any other routing protocol as well.  

Access-point and server configuration guidelines

Guidelines related to access-point and server will be discussed. Guidelines will help the users in understanding the configuration performed on the access point and server.

Security Configuration

A main task in the assessment is the security configuration. The security is configured to allow the manager and consultant department to access finance department’s network. For the purpose of security configuration, the access-list will be configured. Access-list is of three types i.e. named, standard and extended. In the assessment, standard access-list will be used because it allows the user to block IP addresses.

The firm has 5 departments namely, Manager, Consultants, Front desk, Finance and guest. The service requirements are enclosed. Service requirement s 1. 5 departments with 5 networks. The following is to be covered.  Demonstration of the network design in Netsim. Note to the lab tutor: As per the need, the lab tuto r can allocate 15 mins in Week 9 and Week 10 for work progression check and consultation.
